Pterodactyl, Pterobyte's big sister, has moved to Hampton VA. See more pictures at pterobyte.net

Gene, the new owner plans on racing and cruising with her. I hope to be able to bring some pictures. From HYC both the 42 and the 32-2 are in PHRF fleet.

I really like the upgrade on the deck paint color.

A little history on the boat on the 42 page

Looks like I finally get to remove the FOR SALE link. Congrats to Gene and I hope he has a blast with the thing...maybe one year we'll see him at Charleston Race Week? Or Screwpile?

Pterodactyl

Postby Pterodactyl » Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:20 pm

I'm the new owner of Pterodactyl. She is now berthed at Hampton Yacht Club and we are getting her ready for next season. Unfortunately, progress is slow due to some health problems, but we hope to make up for lost time! Will try to post as we progress.

Welcome Gene

Welcome Welcome.
Glad you made it to the forum. It's a great resource for these Evelyns.

You should have no trouble getting crew, that is an awesome boat.

Good Purchase

Postby darkstar32170 » Tue Jan 13, 2009 4:18 pm

Gene:

Congrats on the acquisition of "Pterodactyl." I did 3 Port Huron-Macs on her. Dollar for dollar I don't think you can get a faster boat. The design was years ahead of its time.

If I'm ever down in your direction I'll be looking for a ride.

It's a funny thing about these boats. During the time I owned the E 32-2 formerly known as Direwolf, literally dozens of people approached me and said they'd raced on her at some point, on the Chesapeake. Now boatless, I race on anywhere from 8 to 12 O.P.B.'s (Other People's Boats) a season, and even then I occasionally hear, "Oh, you used to own Accomplice? (Direwolf) I did (X) amount of seasons on her with (whomever owner)."

I suspect there are probably dozens who have seen the insides of Pterodactyl and a bunch of peeps who will miss seeing her on the GLs. Or maybe not miss her depending on how much of her stern they saw, from time to time

Congratulations Gene on your purchase. Pterodactyl had a mind of her own some days. Sad to see her leave.

Rating Certificate

Postby darkstar32170 » Fri Feb 20, 2009 7:39 pm

I hope you can sail her to that rating but I think you got screwed. If I remember right her rating in Detroit was somewhere between 39 and 45. I think the the J44 rated around 36. The E42 is a fast boat but I can't imagine having to give 9 sec/mi to a J44. Hopefully you get enough air to really make her move because that's her strength.

Base rating PHRF New England is 39. OK, so they nick you 6 for the keel mod, that's 33. I've forgotten the other mods, but whatever, back around 6, 7 years ago PHRF of the 'Peake awarded older boats 6 seconds in order to "keep older designs competitive." Not sure if early 80's qualifies as an "older boat" but whomever decided 27 was an OK rating for a 42 on the Chesapeake is clearly on acid.

(I think they do a lot of acid at PHRF of the 'Peake)

I got a ride on a J-122 this past season. Optimized for IRC, but the PHRF number is 30. I think it's a pretty fast boat, faster than a 42. A 42 is going to have a bitch of a time racing PHRF against a J122. Farr 395 is rated 27. A 395 is going to eat a 42's lunch DW in anything over 15, and it aint like the 42 is going to be able to waterline the 395 uphill.

PHRF of the Ches....OK it's volunteers and all that, yada yada, but I think they have a very very hard time thinking creatively down there. I think their approach is very formulaic and if they use VPP's, they are based on some completely separate reality.

--Your insolent, irreverent admin who clearly has an axe to grind with PHRF Ches.

oh yeah and according to YRA LIS (Long Island Sound), Hooligan, with similar mods, right? rates 36.

I'd appeal. They love appeals down in Prince Frederick.

They also have an asymetrical and took a hit for a larger main and a longer poll. I think the boat was optimized for IRC?

Hooligan is a well raced boat in LIS. They rate 31 under Eastern CT Sailing Association (ECSA). This is with a one second credit for I believe Spin Girth. http://join.ecsa.net/cert2008.aspx?b=2052 His rating on the 2003 Certificate is 33 without a 1 second credit.
