Evelyn 42 - Heartbeat

So this section of the forum needed at least one post.
I used to sail on an evelyn 42 "Heartbeat" (RIP - Hurricane Ivan). Great boat. That's the boat that made me want a 32, once I got a grown up job

I have done three (3) Port Huron/Mackinac races on Pterodactyl. With the keel modification that was done to all the remaining 42's the boat does not really sail like a 32 any more. While the 32's are initially tender (can be easily heeled with crew weight) the 42's with the keel mod are pretty stiff and as a result don't move very well in light air. However they are now killers in 15+, especially power reaching.

We always did pretty well the years I was on the boat but never in the money. A couple years later they took a first in class (classes are usually at least 20 boats) and I think they were 6th overall (out of 250+ boats).

Pterodactyl has been further modified. They removed the engine from its location over the keel and installed a new smaller engine with sail drive under the forward edge of the cockpit. In the 32 a similar installation might result in too much weight aft but the 42 is big enough that the engine weight is a much smaller percentage of overall weight.

I used to be a member of the syndicate that owned Pterodactyle with Mark Symonds. I now own a smaller Evelyn. :)

What years did you do the Mack Race with her. I left about 2000.

Then we must have crossed paths. If I remember correctly I was on Pterodactyl 1999, 2000, and 2001. The last two years my daughter, Mary, was with us too. She still keeps in touch with CAZ and had dinner with him this spring down in Houston where she was temporarily assigned.

Speaking of Pterodactyl, the owner emailed me a while ago saying that she was for sale...anyone know if the boat changed hands? Those guys had an impressive program doing both the Back-to-Back-Mac-thing occasionally!

I don't think its changed hands. Its still listed as it has been for the last couple years. For the price it would be a good buy. Especially after all the work they did on her. I would think that it would be a good Newport-Bermuda boat - power reaching most of the way. Its probably a hard sell because not many have heard of the design and how great it can be, even for a 20 year old boat.

How is Caz doing , he was a lot of fun!

A prospective buyer called me the other day and asked about the boat. He said he was heading up there just about now I guess. He is thinking of bringing down to Hampton.

For those of you who get to the results I can tell you the Sagitta (3rd place) is a J44, Majic and Power Tripp are Tripp 40's, Screaming "O" is an Olson 40, and Painkiller4 is a Sydney 38.

Though I think that Pterodactyl and all the Evelyn 42's are great boats, the modifications (I believe they all got the Debroth keels) did hurt the boat's light air abilities. In the Chesapeake with its light air summers I don't know how well the boat will do. They don't really sail like the 32-2's since they were modified.

Great story, THANK!. I am flattered he used the graphic I did with the cave mistress on the back of the Pterodactyl. That was a characterization of the my wife.

I agree about the light air. It was very stiff in light air. I thought several mods to make it go in light wind. I think the mods were built for offshore heavy air.
