E26 Rudder rebuild

Postby paul » Mon Apr 22, 2013 5:39 pm

I'm in planning stages for rebuilding the rudder. A quick inspection last yr showed the above-water section with rot and delamination from the f/g. I drilled several 1/4" holes at bottom but did not see any water come out, so I think wetted foil section is OK. I have an idea of fabricating a jig fixture to keep pins lined up with the c/l of foil, then cut sections out of the side of the of top, dig out old stuff, add structure and foam to inside, then glass it. Hopefully the jig will be rigid enough to hold things in place so
I don't spend much time shimming and sighting up rudder when done.

Is there any information out there on E26 rudder construction?

Does anyone know the NACA foil number?

Is the E26 rudder full foam core? To me it seems top was, and bottom section might be heavier glass, maybe wood core?

Has anyone done a reconstruct on an E26 Rudder/ I thought Pterobyte (Jim) was involved with one.

As usual any comments/help/suggestions greatly appreciated. A new "fast" rudder about $2K, a Catalina 25 which could be modified about $700.
