Sail Preference

Postby paul » Sun Sep 09, 2012 11:37 pm

Thinking about a sail upgrade, wondering what others are using. Any preferences?

Boat is Evelyn 26 OD. At moment boat has a broken TuffLuff so cannot use Jib/Genny. I borrowed Jib and Genny from a J24 w/hanks just to get boat going. I'm leaning toward going with hanks as headsails drop easier after sets, eliminating need for foredeck man to pull down sail. You can play the luff/halyard tension a bit more like a J/24 as well. Have not considered roller furler.

Boat is in New England and we have a short season. Many races are win/lee with legs 1 mi or less. Sail with a short crew much of time, also we see a bit of light air so benefit of hanks seem to have advantage over foil-type systems.

We have tuff luff because that's what the boat came with. However, I also crew (doing bow) on a Santa Cruz 27 with hanks and much prefer the hanks. Getting the job down is faster, easier and safer since the sail stays on the bow.
