When somebody gets a new expensive boat, this happens...

Dear Sirs,
We are lodging a protest on the rating of Allen McMillan s boat Finesse. We feel the current rating of 105 is not warranted. Based on the following facts:

Given:
1. Finesse is well prepared, well sailed by a regular crew. The boat is dry sailed and only launched on race days. She has new or very close to new sails.
2. Finesse highly is modified, Cut out stern , reduced though hulls, relocated tanks, additional bulkheads/stringers for structural strengthening . Ect.
3. She was damaged in two different hurricanes and rebuilt to a better than new condition. Finesse is not a cobbled together hurricane damaged beater. She is in perfect condition inside and out. Allen and Neil are excellent yachtsman and spared no expense in restoring her. Smart sailors do not modify boats to slow them down. Allen and Neil are smart sailors!
4. Weight is not an issue. Finesse sails with more crew than any other boat her size. Usually going to the limit allowed on her certificate.
5. The boat is dry sailed and only launched on race days. The crew does not have access to her to practice.

Facts:

1. Compared to US Sailings national ratings Finesses rating is abnormally high.

Local ratings compared to the US Sailings National High-Low-Average Database.

This chart shows that the GYA tends to rate light boats below average and heavy boats above average. This seems fair for this area as most races are still won by lighter race boats. Finesse, being a very light boat stands out as the anomaly. Rating 106% of average and 100 % of high.

2. Finesse wins in all conditions and wind strengths. Phrf is a one number system and every dog should have it s day. We should question any boat that seems to be dominate in all conditions. Light planning boats kill in heavy air but struggle in 10 to 12. Lowering Finesse s rating six seconds does not change the bay results for the year. Further showing incorrectness of her rating.

We feel a fair base rating for Finesse would be 99, less 3 seconds for modifications giving a net rating of 96. Given this rating she would still be highly competitive wining most races or finishing in the top three.

The same. I have seen his boat a few times after racing ours to Pensacola, and it is in perfect condition with perfect sails. Makes mine look pretty bad. I just think it is funny how a couple of guys in Pensacola can't beat him so they want to affect my rating too. Their arguments make no sense at all. Also they only reference his results and not the other gulf coast E32 results, which would show that we are very competitive with other boats in our rating band.

Matt;

What is your PHRF?

Blitzkrieg and I are anticipating a 96, I think -- short E, OB boats, from
LMPHRF. The other E 32-2 with a PHRF on Lake Michigan is a 102 (Silver Arrow)
but I think it's an IB boat.

105 seems a tad high but not excessive, especially if Finesse is an IB version.

They will look at this data from 'the book'. Getting a rating changed on their appeal is not likely. There have been too many boats with too much history. Everything they argue is moot except the transom mod and they did not focus on that. I suspect the they might be successful if they focus on the mod and any other mods they made to make the boat lighter. Even then it would should only impact that boat. Bluto's rating has not hurt any of us yet.

We rate 99 with the O/B. I just find much of there argument funny, and not really much of an argument at all. They said that he has a boat in perfect condition, with great sails, and an experienced crew. I am pretty sure that is all within the regulations specified by PHRF. Having seen the boat, it would be very difficult to argue the open transom creates any advantage. It looks good though.

I have to say with relatively high level of confidence that PHRF of the Chesapeake would get a chuckle out of that rating adjustment request.

Basically, the people requesting the rating adjustment are saying if you come to the race course prepared (with a high level of preparation, that is) you should be penalized! wot? sheesh.

On the other hand, 105 does sound like a bit of a gift.

If it were me, I'd get rid the "he has new sails and stuff" argument and just show the PHRF rating committee all the other valid ratings from around the different regions.

Actually, if it were me I'd forget about it and just race ;-)

Chesapeake has three IBs at 99. Gulf has 2 at 105. There is a lot of relativity going on too.
Chesapeake has the J35 at 72 and Gulf PHRF has it at 75.

But you are absolutely correct; sour grapes. rotflmao ..... .. ... m
